Global Service Jam-- Fri, March 11, 5pm – Sun, March 13, 3pm EST

“The Global Service Jam is a weekend long design extravaganza for those curious and adventurous enough to join us on a journey. The Global Service Jam is your chance to learn about design thinking and apply it by developing new services inspired by a shared theme. People in more than 45 cities around the world meet together on the Friday evening, find out what the global theme is, and work together to think up, design, and prototype new services related to the theme; all in 48 hours. At the end of the weekend everyone shares their ideas and their newly minted designs are published across the world. Imagine: hundreds of people, jamming to the same theme in different cities, countries and continents – exciting!!! You don’t have to be an expert to participate (but you could be); a sense of playful curiosity is enough to be fully qualified.”

"full stop is a new site-specific dance work inspired by the Gemini Award winning dance-film Streetcar (2004) by Peter Chin and Nick de Pencier. Streetcar brings to life the inner journey of a tired commuter heading home with his fellow passengers. full stop brings together new sets of eclectic personalities colliding in a shared space; hub14 is the public meeting zone where these evocative characters gather. Marie-Josee Chartier appears in the film but embodies a new persona in full stop, joined by an incredible group of performers including: Luke Garwood, Tina Fushell and Colin Edwards.

full stop is a real-time installation in which the four movement artists interact with the audience, the space, and each other. full stop proposes a set of parameters on performers, asking them to use their own choreography as an entrée point into this new environment. Collaborating with designer/director Rebecca Picherack, the artists’ individual worlds will weave together into one seamless show. Well known as an intimate space, hub14 is a venue where artists and audiences meet on a similar level. There is no backstage or reception room: it is open to and for all, full stop."

“Resident dance artist and choreographer Julie Lebel invite you to participate in this exciting and interactive community dance flash mob project. We welcome moms, dads, grandparents and caregivers to participate with their young ones in a stroller to create a dance flash mob to be performed on March 19th, 2011.

How to get involved: Join our weekly sessions to participate in the creation of choreography. “Vancouver Art Gallery’s WE: Vancouver exhibition and related programming will document the range of practices, actions and ideas by designers, artists, architects, filmmakers, writers, activists, and planners that shape and activate this city. The manifestos are based on twelve calls to action, twelve movements, strategies and practices that fundamentally shape Vancouver today: MOVE, ACTIVATE, CHOOSE, LISTEN, UNITE, REMEMBER, SEE, WASTE (not), CONSUME, PROJECT, SHAPE, SURPRISE). FUSE and other Gallery programming events will explore the many individual and collective ways in which Vancouverites creatively contribute to the City.

"The Vancouver Park Board is pleased to announce our Remarkable Women for 2011. In keeping with the City's 125 Anniversary celebrations, the theme for 2011 is community builders in recognition of the fact that a strong and vibrant city is built by its inhabitants. These women, of diverse backgrounds and abilities, represent a commitment to improving their communities through volunteerism, hard work, advocacy and a passionate dedication to change for the good of everyone.

On March 8, 2011, a reception open to the public will be held at Creekside Community Centre from 7-9pm to celebrate the achievements of the Remarkable Women 2011.

In addition, poster making workshops will be held in the days leading up to International Women's Day at various Vancouver community centres, giving members of the public the opportunity to make a personalized poster of a remarkable woman from their own life."

Dear STEPS Enthusiasts,

Here is our first ARTivist Profile. We will be featuring a couple of ARTivists per month from across Canada, highlighting their work past, present and future. STEPS will soon have a database archiving all our ARTivists, so that you can search for people in your area, or working in a particular artistic medium.

Vera Guo of Darcy's Box

Vera conceived of Darcy’s Box, an art installation for the city of Cambridge’s Unsilent Night, as part of her Master’s project in the department of Architecture. The project has two aims: first, to challenge the ways in which people perceive building facades, to see them as potential canvasses for sustainable art in the form of light-projections, and, second, to create community spirit in the interactions and engagements with light-installations in public spaces. Where many urban city centres employ building facades as space for advertisements, Vera sees this as problematic and contributing to visual noise pollution, sensory overload and ultimately apathy. She thus advocates for collaboration between architects, artists and corporations to scale down gargantuan ads, and to employ methods that are environmentally sustainable and innovative to increase community spirit and enjoyment of public space.
